Elizabethan Diary Assignment‏

Occupation (if any) – Wife who stays at home, cooking and cleaning, and taking care of the children.

Income- My husband is a farmer, and our income come from yearly crop production, it changes every year.  20 Pounds a year roughly.

Where in London do you live? On the country side

How much education did you receive? Not that much I went to school until I was 12, then I stayed at home and my mom taught me how to cook and clean.

What were you taught? How to cook, clean, take care of the children, and make sure my husband was always happy.

What is your religion? Catholic

How has your religion affected your life in terms of how you are treated by people in power? Most of the people in power believe in the Protestant religion, the Queens sister however is a firm believer of the Catholic faith and eventually got the Queen to agree to let people practice the Catholic faith without the fear of accusation as long as there was no threat to anyone.

What play do you go to see? Macbeth

How did you know it was playing? I heard about the tragedy of the play from a friend who lives in town.

What other Shakespeare plays might you have been able to see? We could either go to the Tempest, Cymbeline, or the Winter’s Tale.

What play by Shakespeare was your favorite until now? My favourite play until now would have to be Romeo and Juliet.

What actor in the company is your favorite actor? William Slye

How are you dressed when you attend the play? Since I don’t own lots of fancy clothes, I wore one of my 3 dresses. The one I picked was red, had long sleeves, and came to the floor. I wore my church shoes which were black and had little heals on them. I wore a cape like thing that was black and covered most of my dress in the back, I wore it because it kept me warm and tonight it was pretty chilly. I also wore my hair in two side braids, which were twisted into a bun on top of my head.

You are planning to go to a ball (fancy dance party) after the play. How will you dress for that? No I am not planning on going to the ball after because we don’t live in town we don’t get invited to things that are fancy and in town.

What did you dine on before going to the theater? Since we don’t come to town very often because it’s a long walk and we don’t bring hoses very often. Tonight was an exception so me and my husband rode our horses into town and we stopped at a little place on the edge of town.

When did you eat? I had spaghetti and my husband had the steak

What did you drink? I had red wine, and so did my husband.

How much did it cost? All together it was 25 shillings.

How much did you pay for your ticket? Together both of them were 2 pounds
Where did you sit? We were sitting in the middle of the theatre.

A number of your friends chose to spend the afternoon seeing another kind of entertainment, what was it? They planned on going to watch the acrobat show in the park.

Who was the most important person you recognized in the audience? The most important person we seen was the Kings oldest son.

Who ruled England at the time? King James I

What was some gossip about the ruler? He didnt like to do much, he liked to let other people do his work for him.

Who was the Lord Mayor of London at the time? Sir James Pemberton.
